A detailed 18-page technical paper by Nicholas McGuire explores the whys, hows, and wherefores of using the Linux proc filesystem in embedded systems. Although the proc filesystem is normally thought of as mainly being useful in desktop and server Linux systems, it offers some significant potential advantages to embedded and real-time systems and devices, including footprint, performance, interface… configurability, runtime monitoring, and security.
