Linux the fastest-growing smartphone OS

Linux will power about 31 percent of all smartphones sold in 2012, and by then will have shipped in 331 million devices, says ABI. The research firm forecasts 75 percent CAGR (compound annual growth rate) for Linux in smartphones through 2012, making it the fastest-growing OS in the sector. (more…)

WiMAX gathering set for Chicago

A trade show claimed to be “the largest WiMAX-focused event ever held” will take place next month in Chicago. The fourth annual WiMAX World USA, scheduled for Sept. 25 through 27, will feature “participation by virtually all WiMAX players,” event organizer Trendsmedia says. (more…)

IP camera design runs MIPS Linux

ASIC vendor Micronas has introduced a hardware/software development kit for a small camera claimed capable of streaming D1 (DVD) resolution video over IP (Internet protocol) networks. The “Mini-IP Camera” kit is based on Micronas's Cypher ESN7108A SoC (system-on-chip), and runs Linux on the SoC's MIPS core. (more…)

A start-up in the French Alps near Grenoble is readying its second Linux SBC (single-board computer) the size and shape of a USB memory stick. Calao's USB-S8815 is based on a 333MHz ARM9 processor, runs Linux 2.6, and has 128MB each of flash and RAM. (more…)

A startup hopes to challenge Soekris and PC Engines, among others, in the market for compact, customizable computing platforms for networking devices. TimeSys rev’s ARM11 cross-tools, i.MX31 support

Embedded Linux developer services provider TimeSys has updated its cross-toolchain packages for the ARMv6j (ARM11) architecture. Cellular M2M service market to grow, diversify

Revenues from cellular machine-to-machine (M2M) services will quadruple, from approximately $2 billion in 2006 to more than $8 billion in 2012, a new report from ABI Research forecasts. The study also predicts increasing variety in the M2M market's business models. (more…)

Via aims 1W x86 CPU at mobile, embedded apps

Taiwanese chip and board vendor Via Technologies has introduced a new ultra-low voltage (ULV) processor aimed at industrial, commercial, and ultra-mobile applications. Touted as the “world's most power-efficient” x86-compatible CPU, the 500MHz Via Eden ULV processor debuted at an Embedded Systems Conference in Taipei this week. (more…)
